How to become a top car designer

It's a common predicament. Your 13 to 16 years old and desperate to become a car designer but have little idea about how to achieve that burning desire. If you are serious about training as a designer to work in a major car studio then you need to do a course in Transportation Design, a branch of Industrial Design (sometimes known as Product Design). Whereas several hundred design schools around the world offers courses in Industrial Design, only around 20 offer courses that specialise in Transportation or Automotive Design.

Amongst the variety of courses on offer, you need to select one that suits your requirements. Obviously a school that's reasonably close to where you live is a starting point, although they may not be so easy if your outside a region where the course is located. The philosophy and reputation of the course and teaching faculty are also very important factors. Coventry University has a worldwide reputation for young car designers going on to design Top Cars.

Key skills to developing a car career.

Modelling in 3D is a key skill to learn as a young designer. In June,  students at Coventry University exhibited a wide range of final year projects from sports car to urban mobility pods. The photographs below show the detail and thoughts of cars for present day and 2025. The open day was a great way to learn about the course offered at Coventry. One striking car was displayed under the banner heading of "Made in China" which emphasises that good design talent influences car designs the other side of the world.

Chatting to the students you soon realise that car design is one of the most competitive design careers around and the struggle starts with gaining a place on one of these courses. Competition for places is fierce and schools can often offord to choose the best applicant. Simply sending in an application isn't enough, in addition your going to need a good portfolio of work to back up your application. Your really have to be a very good artist to become a car designer. So it seems that you have to continue your car doodles from an early age and you just might end up designing the next Jaguar, Fiat 500 or wacky satelite controlled mobility pod. Car designers for some is a boys dream that can come true and is increasingly a global career.
